It becomes like second nature to you. Back in 2010 a University College London study showed that it took an average of 66 days (i.e. over 2 months) to make a new habit virtually automatically. Therefore, this in depthstudy tells us two very important things: • •

Habits don’t become automatic overnight Habits cannot be broken overnight.

A habit is something that only comes via time and repeated action. We often don’t even recognize ourselves as doing a bad habit until usually someone else points it out. The brain likes to develop these habits because it can conserve its mental energy toward another task while it engages in the habit.

Good Habits Versus Bad Habits And In Between In truth, the only real difference between good and bad habits is that the acquired behavior pattern is a good action or a bad action as defined by the majority of society. •

You need to determine what good habits you want to adopt, then repeat the good action that constitutes that habit repeatedly until you do it automatically without realizing it.

You need to recognize the bad habits you want to abolish, then avoid repeating the bad action that constitutes that habit continuously until you automatically do an alternative action instead that is considered better than that bad action.

It will take time to “rewire” your brain to dispose of the bad habit and take up the new good habit. A support system can include family and friends who can check in on you and ensure you’re sticking with the new good habit. The problem with the massive change approach is that people often try to do too much, get overwhelmed, lose motivation and enthusiasm for it, then revert back to their old habits and routines. It’s better to successfully integrate a new habit instead of trying to implement 3-5 new habits and only doing them occasionally, while still doing your old habits here and there. •

The amount of effort needed to successfully implement a new habit will directly impact how much time it takes to successfully implement that new habit.

If the new habit you want to adopt is complex and substantial, you should expect to take more time to successfully integrate it into your regular routine.

Each new habit you want to integrate into your regular routine is something you believe will help you to improve your life and build your wealth, but that will NOT happen if you don’t successfully integrate it. Sure, I get it. You have lots of work to do. You have debt maybe. Maybe you’re tired from shopping and maybe you’ve got a stomach ache. Now think about a true warrior. Think about someone who sleeps rough, unsure of whether or not they’re going die during the night. Then they wake up, no time for a shower or a nice breakfast, and they leap straight into action. They ignore their wounds, they take lives and they see their friends and their brothers in arms shot and killed in front of them. But no I get it. You’re tired. You had to work until 6pm last night…

What I’m getting at, is that your life isn’t really hard. You might think it’s hard and sometimes it might feel hard. But there are people out there with much worse lives than you. There are people out there who live with crippling illness and not two cents to rub together. And many of them do this with a dignity, a grace and a bravery that puts the rest of us to shame. You see, the warrior mindset actually has nothing to do with combat. In fact, the hooligans that start bar fights and that think they’re ‘hard’ for starting fights are about as far from true warriors as it gets. Ask anyone who has seen real combat if they would want to risk their health and waste their energy on looking for trouble. The warrior mindset is different. This is about knowing what you want and going for it. It’s about being hard and it’s about not letting little things get you down. It’s about pushing ahead with what you know is right and it’s about carrying responsibility and hardship on your shoulders with dignity and pride. It’s about not letting your emotions get the better of you and it’s about not taking the easy answer or the easy route to solve your problems.

What is the Warrior Mindset? The warrior mindset is different. This is about knowing what you want and going for it. It’s about being hard and it’s about not letting little things get you down. It’s about pushing ahead with what you know is right and it’s about

hardship on your shoulders with dignity and pride. It’s about not letting your emotions get the better of you and it’s about not taking the easy answer or the easy route to solve your problems. So where does this title and this approach come from? What is the theory behind the warrior’s mindset?

Of course, it comes from our romantic image of the warrior and from stories of warriors from history. It comes from tales of our bravest men and women who fought actual battles while remaining cool headed, sacrificing themselves for others and doing incredible things. Now, we all know that in reality, not every warrior fits this mould. For every heroic individual who put themselves in the line of fire, there would have been hundreds more soldiers that complained, that were in it for the wrong reasons, or that wouldn’t put themselves out for others. Romanticising warfare is in fact a terrible idea – it is a truly horrific state of affairs and very few people feel like ‘warriors’ when they are faced with enemy fire. But it’s that image of the ideal ‘warrior’ that we’re looking at here. And at our notions of history’s greatest warriors like the samurai or the Spartans. The point is that some people manage to stay cool and calm in even the worst situations. Some people constantly forge ahead and do not allow small inconveniences or a lack of creature comforts stand in their way. And those people put us to shame. Those people make our complaints seem very minor indeed. Now imagine if you could take that same mindset and apply it to modern life. Instead of getting tired or bogged down, instead of being distracted and tempted, you would instead drive forward with an unstoppable, bulletproof mentality. Your enemies would quake knowing that there was nothing they could do to stop you and your career obstacles, relationship goals and financial plans would all crumble beneath your will. If you apply an iron will and warrior mentality to a modern lifestyle, you get extreme efficiency, determination and pride. Self-discipline, determination and selfsufficiency are traits that make us strong and that help us get what we want. They

are traits that make us good parents, good friends and good partners. They are traits that help us to live with ourselves and to earn respect and admiration from others. Imagine if you had the mental strength to sit in a freezing cold shower for hours on end. Imagine if you weren’t phased in life threatening situations. Take those traits and then put them up against the absolutely measly challenges that most of us face today. They would fall like dominos. Having a warrior’s mindset and going through modern life is like bulging with muscles and having to lift 5kg. Developing that warrior’s mindset is like a workout for your mind, your philosophy and your soul. It will make you unstoppable.

…Like what you're reading? Why? Because it will allow you to then accomplish a huge range of other goals. When you know how to set goals, it allows you to effectively work toward anything. This is the key to unlocking pretty much everything you could want from life. So ironically, the first goal you should focus on is the goal of setting goals! And until now, you’ve probably been doing it all wrong…

The Problem With Your Current Goals How can a goal be wrong? Sure, any objective is a worthwhile one, but the way that you phrase your goals and structure them, is going to massively change your likelihood of finding success. Let’s take weight loss as an example because it’s one of the more straightforward goals that is easiest to implement. When you set out to lose weight, you should start with a concrete goal. And for most people this will look something like this: “Lose 2 stone by next year” This is a terrible goal.

Why? First of all, it is far too vague. How are you losing weight? Weight from where? Why do you want to lose the weight? What do you actually want to look like? At the same time, it’s out of your control. Even if you are completely committed to your goal, you may find that outside forces prevent you from being successful. Maybe you get ill, maybe you accidentally follow the wrong program, maybe it turns out you have a bad metabolism! Finally, the goal is too far in the future. If your goal is to lose weight by next year, that then essentially gives you a license to procrastinate. The target is so far away, that you indulge yourself in a little overeating or put off exercise for a while and not worry about it until next month. 6 months pass and you realize you’re actually further from your goal. And because it’s too late, you’re likely to just give up at this point. Not a good goal!

What Good Goals Look Like So, what does a good goal look like? How might you phrase this same objective in a manner that will increase your chances of success? The first thing to do, is to focus on things that are immediately within your control and that are not influenced by outside factors at all. These goals should be things that you can accomplish in a guaranteed manner and that you will be immediately graded on on a pass-fail basis. So for instance, instead of aiming to lose 2 stone by next year, you would use this goal: “I will work out three times a week, every week, for at least 15 minutes” Now that is a goal that you can aim for. Regardless of your metabolism, or of injury, or of any other outside factor, this is a goal that you can accomplish. It also means you can’t ‘put off’ the goal and it means you’ll never reach that disappointing point where you can no longer stand any chance of completing it. At any point in your life, there is no reason that you can’t set out to accomplish this goal and expect to be successful. But by focussing on this small short term goal, you will then find that the long-term goal of losing the weight takes care of itself.

How to Formulate Your Goals But that doesn’t mean that any short-term goal that is binary in nature is going to cut it.

First of all, you need to know what you want and make sure that the goal you are setting for yourself is going to help you get there. You need your goals to be intrinsically motivating and that means that you have to feel truly passionate about them. It’s only be following a goal you really feel excited about, that you will find you have the energy and motivation to keep going. Working out for 15 minutes a day is an effective goal because it is sure to take you closer to your broader goal of losing weight. By keeping that end goal in mind, you should stand a better chance of staying motivated to work out even when you’re feeling tired, or when you’re feeling low on willpower. And you shouldn’t just be aiming to ‘lose weight’ either. Instead, you should have a more concrete vision of what this entails. Do you want to be thinner? Do you want to be more muscular? Why do you want that thing? Is it so that you will be more attractive to the opposite sex? Or because you want more energy? Be honest with yourself and listen to that drive inside that is pushing you toward the goal you want to accomplish. If your goal is to make money, then try to focus on what the emotional hook is that is making you want that money. It likely boils down to more than cash – maybe it’s status you really want? Power? Confidence? Freedom? Only by really understanding the true nature of your own dreams can you a) take the fastest route to accomplishing them and b) maintain the drive and motivation you’re going to need to get there. This is going to require some soul-searching! Moreover, you need to ensure that the goals are achievable and realistic and that you have broken them down into small enough steps. Case in point: our goal for weight loss is to work out 15 minutes per day. That’s a tiny amount but it works because it’s achievable and realistic. If you make your goal harder – such as working out for an hour a day – then you’re going to find you’re quickly disappointed when you can’t find the time or the energy. You’ll put off the exercise and make excuses. The best part about training for just 15 minutes is that once you start, you’ll often find you go for longer. Put it this way: it’s much better to have a small, easy-to-accomplish goal and stick with it, than it is to have a massive, life-changing goal that you can’t manage! But of course if you’re making your goal smaller, that means that it will take you longer to reach the eventual destination you’re gunning for. This is not a problem: this is just another thing you need to accept if you want to accomplish anything. Things worth havingtake time. Take small steady steps and enjoy the journey.

…Like what you're reading?
